so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs. (2 Corinthians 2:11)
As I look at the actions of the Christian church, there is one tactic of the enemy of which the church seems to be unaware. I call it Satan’s Teeter Totter.
Can you believe those people? Sinning and carrying on like that in public. They have no shame or sense of decency! We should give them a hard time and condemn them at every opportunity!
Can you believe those judgmental Christians? Acting as if they are riding in on a white horse and never do anything wrong! They wouldn’t know grace, mercy and humility if it came up and bit them in the butt!
Do you see those people? “Acting Up” as though they were the victims when this is clearly punishment for their sin and they need to repent! You would think that getting sick would show them the error of their ways, but look at how hard-hearted and evil they are!
Do you see those Christians? They act as though love was so important to them, but show them a person suffering from a horrible disease and not only do they not want to help, they are the first to throw a stone!
As I watch the world around me and the bitter, hateful Red/Blue politics of division that are destroying the United States, it is clear to me that this “Teeter Totter” is the tactic that Satan is using to attack our country. He goes to the Red side and inflames conservatives against homosexuals and argues that these sinners are getting the divine punishment that they deserve! He goes to the Blue side and inflames liberals against the callous and uncaring attitudes of the conservatives and pushes them to be even more strident and harsh in their demands for homosexual rights! He goes back to the conservatives and inflames them with this new outrage. Back and forth, forth and back stoking up hatred of one side against the other so that each side demonizes the other and thinks that there is nothing human, redeeming or positive about them.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)
How can the church overcome this tactic? As I have argued in my post on abortion, talk about issues in terms of righteousness and love and not uncaring laws and regulations. As I have written in my post thanking God for Mitt Romney, the church needs to apply the entire word of God and not pick and choose the parts that it likes according to the flesh. If Christians had been the first people to care for those dying of AIDS, many would have seen the love of Christ and repented of their lifestyle and the horrific partisan gridlock that is destroying America would have been lessened as liberals saw that conservatives really did care. If the church had stood up against the usurious practices of America’s banking sector, then young Americans would have seen a righteousness that does not merely impose harsh requirements and punishments on them but protects them from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous business interests. If only the church stood for the entire word of God, then our country wouldn’t be in so much trouble.
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
